The AES2510 is a capacitive swipe fingerprint sensor from AuthenTec’s AES-series line, once one of the most widely deployed biometric authentication components in notebook and laptop computers, including systems from Lenovo, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. Unlike an area-style sensor, it captures a fingerprint image as the user’s finger swipes across a narrow sensing strip, then passes that image data to the host system’s fingerprint-matching software for login authentication. AuthenTec’s sensor technology became the basis for Apple’s Touch ID after Apple acquired the company in 2012.
