What end-of-life actually means
Manufacturers retire parts on a schedule, and the vocabulary they use tells you how much time you have.
The practical consequence is that timing changes your options. Before the LTB window closes, you can still buy new from the factory. After it closes, you are sourcing from what already exists, which is what we do.
Where to buy EOL and obsolete electronic components
There are four realistic sources for a discontinued part, and it is worth knowing which one you are dealing with.
Remaining Franchise Stock
Franchised distributors sometimes hold inventory after production ends. Worth checking first, and usually the fastest answer when it works.
Manufacturer’s Last-Time Buy
Only available while the LTB window is open. If you have a PDN in hand and the date has not passed, this is the cleanest route.
Authorized Aftermarket Manufacturers
A small number of companies are licensed by the original manufacturer to continue producing discontinued semiconductors. Excellent provenance when the part is one they carry, and limited to the lines they have licensed.
Independent Markets
Verified surplus, excess and legacy inventory held by distributors, contract manufacturers and OEMs worldwide. This is the largest source by far, and the one that requires the most diligence, because provenance and part condition vary.
How to source an obsolete part: six steps
- Confirm the exact part number. Include the package, temperature grade and any suffix.
LM317TandLM317MDTare not interchangeable, and a suffix mismatch is the most common reason a sourced part fails incoming inspection. - Establish the part’s real status. Active, NRND, EOL with an open last-time-buy window, or fully obsolete. The manufacturer’s PCN or PDN is the authoritative answer.
- Check whether the LTB window is still open. If it is, buying new from the factory is almost always the better option, and you should size that order for the remaining life of the product rather than the current build.
- Search the independent market for verified stock. Ask for quantity, date code, packaging condition and the supplier’s position in the chain. A quote without provenance is not a quote you can plan production around.
- Require test and inspection evidence proportionate to the risk. A commodity passive on a consumer build and a programmable logic device on a flight system do not need the same level of scrutiny. Decide the level before you buy, not after the parts arrive.
- Buy the lifetime quantity, not the immediate one. Obsolete inventory is finite. The second order for a discontinued part is usually harder and more expensive than the first, and sometimes impossible. Factor in storage conditions for moisture-sensitive devices before you commit to a quantity.

Last-time-buy planning and obsolescence management
The cheapest obsolescence problem is the one you see coming. If you have a product with a long service life, the components inside it will outlive their production runs. Planning for that is a different exercise from reacting to a shortage.
Forecast the remaining production volume plus a spares and warranty allowance, then add margin for the fact that a second buy may not be possible. Under-buying at LTB is the single most common cause of an obsolescence emergency two years later.
Moisture-sensitive devices have floor-life limits and need controlled storage to remain usable. A last-time buy that degrades in a warehouse solves nothing.
